Pedro Reyes is a Mexican artist who has taken 6,700 seized and decommissioned guns donated by the Mexican government and turned them into musical instruments! The result is a haunting version of John Lennon’s “Imagine” like nothing I’ve ever heard before. When you see the instruments up close, you realize how awesome it is.
This goes to show that everything we create is beautiful. The intention of the creation of those weapons was far from holy, but the Universe had always intented them to end up in Reyes’ hands. Reyes says, he is “turning these agents of death into instruments of life.”
William Morris once proclaimed
The capacity of seeing beauty means the capacity for art. If you have a population which cannot see beauty, you will have a population which cannot produce beauty: a population which, even if a small amount of beauty is produced by the élite, will not generally acknowledge that beauty.
It’s true that there are bad things happening out there right now, people using guns to subdue others, but I dream of a day where weapons are no longer used, where they are recycled to make instruments, to decorate, to collect as memorabilia. The Universe always finds a balance. Always.
Today, I say a little prayer for artists. They are our future. Our hope. A manifestation of our deepest fears and dreams. There’s a tiny little artist in each of us with the capacity to create. Reach out and give your inner artist a hug today 🙂
